Autumn lingered lazily the year my father-in-love fell gravely ill. Lung cancer had eaten away at his body for quite some time. We knew the recommended treatments were only prolonging the inevitable, not preventing the race. So when we got the phone call to come home quickly, we made the 9-hour trip without hesitation.
